Flags

Anecdote

Some three quarters of the houses down our street have flags or bunting or both up for this platinum jubilee that's going on. Later today there's a street party, but fortunately the forecast is predicting downpours so we'll be spared several hours of country & western music being played rather too loudly (that is, remotely audibly).

Although peer pressure doesn't work on me, going along with celebrating the jubilee seems a good way to keep in with the neighbours, so I splashed out on two flags from a stall in Colchester.

They're almost the same size and same colours. If it comes to an actual party with food and stuff, we have a novelty biscuit tin from Marks & Spencer that doubles as a music box playing something quite close to "God Save the Queen".

I think I'll keep the flags in case HM lasts another five years and we have a 75th-anniversary jubilee. This would normally be called a diamond jubilee, but because Queen Victoria established diamonds as being for 60 years when it comes to years of reign, something else will have to be invented (I vote for "graphene jubilee").

Whatever, so long as Rod Stewart doesn't sing at the party.
