Hands on Head

Anecdote

I remembered something today that I hadn't thought about for years: when we were at primary school, we were sometimes told by the teacher to put our hands on our heads. This involved pretty much what it sounds like it involved: interlocking your fingers and putting your hands on top of your head. The whole class had to do it, usually because we were being too noisy.

We didn't do anything when our hands were on our heads except wait to be told we could take them off. This could take awhile: eventually, we'd be resting on our elbows because it ached so much.

I don't know if this form of punishment is still practised in any schools in the UK, but I rather suspect it fell foul of human rights legislation.
