Getting Organised

Anecdote

I got another academic book through the post today (Game Development Essentials, if you must know) and finally had to accept what had been apparent for some time: the stack of books-to-be-read I have next to my desk is just too high. I concluded this after it spontaneously fell over and spread itself over the floor.

So, I sat down and arranged the books in what turned out to be five piles:

• Books I need to have handy because I often refer to them for various reasons. Examples: my own; Game Architecture and Design.
• Books I really need to read in full and really should have read already, but which I don't really want to... Examples: Man, Play and Games; From Ritual to Theatre.
• Books with some interesting papers in that I have yet to read, alongside others I've already read or have no intention of ever reading. Examples: First Person; ScreenPlay.
• Books by people I know, which I want to read or am part-way through but they come too fast! Examples: half-real; Unit Operations.
• Books which, upon closer inspection, I decided there and then that I've read the interesting parts of, and I can therefore transfer them to an actual bookshelf (the one in my university office). Examples: Massively Multiplayer Games for Dummies; Swords and Circuitry.

As a result of this sorting, my pile was a whole four books shorter and no longer fell over.

I'll start reading them just as soon as I'm done with the 42 research papers I have on top of the book pile.
