Reboot

Weird

I went to London by train yesterday. This was weird in itself, because normally there will be engineering works on a Sunday, so trains are replaced by buses (the tickets for which still cost the same as for trains). Somehow, the engineering works were all scheduled for the lines beyond Colchester, leaving the Colchester-to-London segment untouched. I expect someone will have been fired for this oversight.

About ten minutes into the hour-long journey, the train stopped. I could smell what was either burning rubber or an electrical fault, so was somewhat pessimistic when the driver announced there was a problem.

After some discussion with an engineer over the phone, it turned out that the solution was to reboot the train. I didn't know that entire trains could bbe rebooted, but apparently they can be. The driver warned use that there would be no lighting while he turned the train off and on again.

Sure enough, the lights went off, then a minute or so later they came on again and shortly after that the train began to move.

The heating also went off. When it came back, it was air conditioning. Luckily, the driver noticed after a few minutes and told it to warm the train up rather than cool it down.

My wife, who commutes, tells me she's been on several trains that have had to be rebooted.

Fortunately, neither of us has been on an aircraft with that problem.
