Anecdote
We used to play board games every weekend when I was a child. One that I remember was called Masterpiece; it was about trading famous works of art. The works of art in question were from the National Gallery.
Masterpiece was a decent game, but quite reliant on luck, so not one I'd ask to play except for reasons of variety. I hadn't brought it to mind for years, but I was wandering around the National Gallery a few weeks ago and kept seeing paintings from it. Here are a couple I took snaps of:
I really liked the one of the man when I was young, because of the amazing brishwork on the eyes. Because of this, I can remember its name: Portrait of Cornelis van de Geest.
OK, so I remembered the first name as "Cornelius" and it took me a moment to bring to mind the name of the artist (Anthony van Dyck), but still.
The one of the woman is Le Chapeau de Paille, also known as Portrait of Susanna Lunden, by Peter Paul Rubens. I had to look that up; I could tell it was by Rubens, but I didn't like it enough for its name to stick. It's definitely not about the hat....
Games can be so educational!
