Weird

Among the job lot of playing cards I bought recently was a Waddington's deck. Waddington's is a brand close to my heart because we used to play using Waddington's #1 playing cards when I was a kid (they're still my pack of choice), and almost all the board games we played were by Waddington's. Also, they were based in Leeds, which, its being in Yorkshire, gave them even more kudos.

The company was bought by Hasbro in 1994, which put an end to its games business (but not its jigsaw and card businesses). The deck I acquired has an Ace of Spades used between 1925 and 1960, and a King of Spades with second-variant pre-1942 eyebrows (yes, eyebrow shape is a thing). It's therefore probably from maybe 1935-1941.

For once, it's not the faces of the cards themselves that are interesting, but the backs. This is an early example of a tobacco-branded pack (for which Waddington's pretty well cornered the UK market).

They may not affect your throat, but it's your lungs you should be worried about.
