Dandy

Anecdote

We went to see the Dungeons & Dragons movie yesterday.

It was quite entertaining. There were recognisable D&D tropes, spells, monsters and character classes, which added value for those who know some D&D, but it was just a generally likeable movie. My wife, who has never played D&D, loved it! It had humour, decent characters, a tangible plot and magic; that's pretty well all she needed. There was even a dungeon at the start (albeit a vertical one) and a dragon (albeit an overweight one).

OK, so some of the plotlines and character arcs were somewhat predictable, but that's true of most films nowadays. My wife compared it to a Fantasy equivalent of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, which I'll take her word for as I've never seen a GotG movie. The characters were strong, though — the paladin in particular — and I expect to see sequels (or, failing that, a TV spin-off).

It was only afterwards that I realised the leading baddie was played by the daughter of the actor who played Giles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Well her career certainly went in a different direction.
