Anecdote
In the early 1990s, I did some work with a company called Everex in the USA. They were a computer manufacturer and we were going to make MUD run on their STEPcube PCs (which came with a Unix variant they called Esix). The deal came to nothing because the company went bankrupt in 1993, following the collapse in demand of tape back-up systems (of which they made half of those sold worldwide).
Anyway, when I visited their factory they gave me two Everex mugs. They looked really nice! They were a rich shade of dark blue, with gold trimmings. I gave one to my mother, because she also admired them, and I kept one to myself.
A decade later, with Everex gone, I decided that perhaps I ought to make use of my mug instead of leaving it to collect dust while advertising a defunct company, so I did.
A week later, the handle came off.
While I was going through my mother's things, I came across her Everex mug, which she'd kept in among her best glassware ("best" as in "only one of the six pieces in the set is broken"). I recovered it, and it was still in excellent condition so I kept it.
Last week, I thought maybe I should get some use out of it. I had it in mind that the dishwasher would take care of the Everex logo after a while and I'd be left with a mug in a glorious blue.
A week later, the handle came off.
Everex was short for "ever for excellence".
Their computers were better than their mugs.
