Here's a sign at dog-eye level on a wall in Tenerife:
The name "Canary Islands" comes from the Spanish "Islas Canarias", which in turn comes from the Latin "Canariae Insulae" meaning "dog islands".
This must be why the dogs here are sufficiently law-abiding to take notice of these signs.
