Stamped

Weird

In an effort to collect the seigniorage on unused stamps, Royal Mail is switching to a new kind of stamp at the end of January. This one has a bar code on it, for doubtless honest purposes which will have nothing to do with making stamps expire by a certain date.

I received two items in the post yesterday. One of them was a leaflet from Royal Mail telling me how to send in my old stamps to get replacement new ones.

The other was this:

Someone has found another way to use their old stamps.

That 8½p stamp was issued in 1975. The 2½p stamp was issued in 1972. The 3p and 7½p stamps were issued in 1971 — the year British currency went decimal. Decimal halfpennies were withdrawn in 1984.

I don't think I've received a letter with a 51-year-old stamp on it before.
