Anecdote
A few years ago, a friend of my mother's who was losing his sight gave her his copy of The Longman Encyclopaedia, telling her she was the only person he knew who would appreciate it.
She did not appreciate it, so recently gave it to me.
I don't appreciate it either. It dates from 1989, and doesn't include an entry for "Internet". Had it done so, they might have realised that physical encyclopaediae were soon to be on the way out.
Everything in it, I can find on the WWW from reputable, up-to-date sources. Its only use is for out-of-date sources. If you want to see the world as it was when passage across the Berlin Wall was allowed but the USSR hadn't collapsed, it captures those few months.
I don't think I shall be keeping a book that measures 28cm x 23cm x 7cm and weighs 3.455kg on the off-chance I might want to refresh my memory of that period, though.
To the recycling bin!
