Outburst
A book references something Tolkien said.
I look up the citation in the book's bibliography.
The book directs me to page ix of The Silmarillion.
I look in my copy of The Silmarillion.
There is no page ix in my copy of The Silmarillion.
I look up the exact words quoted by the first book.
The words are in letter 131 from The Letters of J. R. R. Tolkien.
The Letters of J. R. R. Tolkien were edited by three people, none of whom are J. R. R. Tolkien.
Twenty minutes of effort are insufficient to persuade Microsoft Word that the three people should be referred to as editors, not authors.
I choose the leading editor and say he is the author of the book.
Nobody reads references anyway.
