I pronounce the word "omicron" with the first O sounding like the Os in "solo". I pronounce the O in "omega" the same way. Some people, however, pronounce these Os like the O in "hot".
Twice, so far, I've heard TV news reporters who pronounce the O the second way say "omnicron" rather than "omicron". This is a little unnerving, as it sounds as if it's the Latin-derived "omni-" (meaning "all") and the Greek-derived "-cron" (meaning "time"). That would be a really bad name for a virus variant.
Still, once we'd mixed Latin and Greek to create the word "television", the battle was lost.
