Anecdote
There's no fibre-optic cable connecting our street to the Internet, so I have to use a wireless connection instead. Last week, I noticed that the service provider had much better plans than the one I was on (which was so old it didn't even feature in their advertising any more), so I decided to upgrade. My connection was previously 24Mbps; it's now 80Mbps.
Well, I'm paying for 80mpbs; I'm actually getting 68mpbs when I run a speed check.
Because the connection is wireless, this means it can act flakily in bad atmospheric conditions or if birds get vengeful. I therefore still have a BT line I can fall back on. This one is basically clockwork: it runs at 1.8mbps, maximum. That's still good enough for Zoom and email, though.
The best thing about the new service is that it isn't usage-capped. My old one allowed 120GB of transmission a month, which we frequently got close to and sometimes exceeded (especially that time when one of the security cameras sent 6,000 images before running out of battery). Now, I can download as much as I want without worrying that the connection may be choked.
Fast connection, no quota: I may be downloading some of those games that have been waiting patiently in my Steam wishlist now.
