Anecdote
I ordered a new clock off the Internet because my old one was losing 5 minutes a day. The new one duly arrived, but the second hand had been broken off in transit. It looked OK so I tried to fix it back on, but to no avail. The problem was that the top of the axle to which it attaches had snapped. The second hand itself is perfectly fine. I attempted to glue it on, but that merely seized up the mechanism so I had to take it off and spend 15 minutes with a craft knife clearing the dead adhesive out of the gubbins.
Anyone need a second-hand second hand?
