Anecdote
My colleague Udo is leaving to take up a chair in Germany, for reasons to do with having better pay, less work, more prestige, fewer students, a bigger office, a nicer environment, more power, actual tenure and a whopping great pension. As is traditional when a member of staff leaves, he's left a pile of books outside his office that vultures in the rest of the department can pick over to see if there are any they want.
Hmm, I think maybe I'll give this one a miss.
