Anecdote
As my Deleted Items folder had 120,093 items in it I figured I should maybe purge it. I last had a go at it in late 2014, so today deleted everything prior to 2017.
I now have 85,785 emails in the folder. That's much more manageable!
That said, it's a little concerning that I was averaging around 15,000 emails a year in 2015/2016 and more like 40,000 a year in 2017/2018. Those spammers have really upped their game.
Still, it's not as bad as the days a decade or more ago when I was averaging 1,000 emails a day...
