Anecdote
Wife: It's the RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch this weekend. I'm going to count some!
Me: When I was at school, one of our teachers told us to count birds for an hour at the weekend. When we told him how many birds we'd seen, he said that we hadn't seen enough and told us to do it again. This time, we counted the birds we saw then multiplied the totals by five or six and added a few extra for good measure. Then we included one or two rarer birds, such as a jay or a falcon. This time, the teacher accepted our results.
Daughter: This wholly explains the massive decline in bird populations since 1970.
