Anecdote
My younger daughter has installed a motion-detector air freshener in the downstairs toilet, so every time anyone enters it releases a pre-emptive squirt of oh, I don't know, some kind of floral scent. The thing is, it makes a sudden noise when it does this. Sudden noises make me jump.
So far, it hasn't made me jump at an inopportune moment, but I'm hoping I'll get used to it soon or it could entail a change of trousers.
