Anecdote

As part of an entry encyclopoedia entry, I wrote the following line:

Avatar was notable for having graphics in an era when most computers did not even have screens.

The editor inserted the word "graphical" before "screens", because it had the potential to be misleading otherwise. How could computers not have screens?

After explaining the situation, we went with:

Avatar was notable for having graphics in an era when most computers did not even have screens — they had teletypes.

Many of today's students haven't even seen a typewriter, of course.
