Anecdote
I've just spent another two hours digging a trench in the garden, trying to find a pipe. I've now got it two feet deep and eight feet long (feet seem more useful for describing trenches than centimetres), the rain during the week having been absorbed by (and in so doing softened) the band of clay that stopped me last weekend. It's still full of annoying stones and bits of roof tile, so I'm not down to undisturbed ground yet.
If I don't find the pipe, I'd better find some Roman coins or something. Otherwise, that would just be cruel.
