Here's the MUDDL code from MUD1 that described the levels in the game:

male novice
warrior
hero
champion
superhero
enchanter
sorcerer
necromancer
legend
wizard
female novice
warrior
heroine
champion
superheroine
enchantress
sorceress
necromancess
legend
witch
As you can see, we only had 10 levels. Today's MMOs have many more levels. Over the weekend, Blizzard announced that the next World of Warcraft expansion would take player characters up to level 100.
Except, well, there's a level 90 boost that means you can take any one of your characters up to level 90 whatever their level was before. For a boosted character, you only play levels 90 to 100. It may look as if there are a hundred levels, but actually there are only 11.
I guess that's progress for you...
