Anecdote
I bought some antique French playing cards recently. They have plain backs, no indeces, rounded (gilt) edges and two-way pips. This dates them to the late 1800s. However, they were also advertised as being hand-coloured. That's unusual for cards of this period, which is why I decided to buy them.
Here they are:
Hmm. I hadn't realised that "hand-coloured" meant "hand-coloured using a felt-tip pen a couple of weeks ago"...
