Why is it that cosmological events cause clouds to form over Britain?
Two nights of clear skies, then when there are Geminids to look at, cloud. In fact, worse than cloud: fog. I've lost count of how many meteor showers, comets, 3-planets-aligned or whatever I've missed because the sky chose that particular night to cloud over. For all I know, there could be the most wondrous display of northern lights outside right now.
At least we managed to see the 1999 eclipse in Cornwall, but only because my elder daughter did some kind of WHMMMMMMMMM IZAAH cloud-clearing thing.
