Anecdote
I took my car in today for a pre-check so they can send photos of the damage to it off to the insurance company and get it all cleared before they do any actual work. The repairs are going to take 5 days, so I guess there will be welding involved...
The expert who inspected it noticed that there was a horizontal scrape along the wheel behind the damaged door. This means that it wasn't moving when the damage occurred, which means I can absolve myself of blame. It seems that I didn't hit something and not notice.
