Anecdote
I was called a hero yesterday.
I was on the tube at around 11pm and a woman got up to get off. I saw a purse where she was sitting and said, "Excuse me, is that your purse?".
She looked back, saw with some shock that it was, and realised that if I hadn't pointed it out she would have got off the train leaving her purse behind. "What a hero!" she said, approvingly.
I suspect that the word "hero" may carry less value than it used to do, but nevertheless shall await the customary MBE expectantly.
