I've been meaning to watch the documentary Get Lamp for some time now, primarily because I'm in it but also because I'm interested in its subject matter — text adventures. Today, I finally got around to it (the version here, with a director's Q&A either side of it).
It's a lot better than I thought it would be. There are many interviewees I'd like to have heard more of, but without turning it into a multi-part series I don't suppose there was the space for it. There was one comment that really struck home with me, though, made by a player called Austin Seraphin: "There's something here that needs to be re-found". I think he's right, we really have lost something precious that we once had.
That said, I hate the puzzle-solving aspect of interactive fiction and wish the games were much more open-ended. Or hey, they could make them multi-player!
