Anecdote
Today, I spent 6 hours trying to get the downstairs toilet to work before I gave up. The time included two trips to buy bits of pipe and stuff, so it wasn't all screwing/unscrewing the same screws and attaching/unattaching the same pipes. It was also driving to/from the same shops.
I have concluded that either I can stop the cistern from leaking or I can stop the gasket connecting the cistern to the toilet from leaking, but if I want to stop both I'm going to need to do major surgery to the wall. Either that, or buy a new cistern.
All because the doughnut valve was installed upside down...
