I mentioned last week that my home town had won a Quality Coast Award for the condition of its beach.
I got an email from my dad today, explaining that it hadn't so much won it as lost the Blue Flag Award it had been granted the last time Keep Britain Tidy dished them out. Apparently, the cause was a drop in water quality caused by excessive rain last summer. I guess that means too many agricultural chemicals got washed off the fields into the sea; either that, or the sea has to have a certain level of salinity to qualify.
As for how it managed to get a Blue Flag Award last year, your guess is as good as mine. I'm going to go with faulty measuring equipment that can't disinguish between wet, warm, balmy sand between your toes and a dead porpoise.
