Anecdote
I was expecting it to be fairly easy to find a cheap replacement for my watch. I realised that it was unlikely I'd find someone in the middle of Las Vegas able to take the back off my normal watch so I could put in a new battery, but I figured I should be able to find a watch somewhere without much trouble.
HA!
Ohh, there are plenty of watches for sale in Las Vegas, it's not hard to find them at all. What's hard is finding ones that cost less than the price of the air fare to get here. Jeez! I was beginning to think I'd have to order one off the Internet.
I don't know how long it took me to find a watch I could actually afford (really I don't — I didn't have a watch), but the department store I finally found with a watch sale going on was closing in 10 minutes at 9pm when I bought my replacement, so it must have been at least a couple of hours that I spent wandering around.
The resulting timepiece is actually quite nice, as it happens, and its metal strap alomost fits. So long as I don't need much blood in my left hand, I should be able to manage with it until I get back to the UK and get a pair of pliers onto the back of my old watch.
Hmm. Maybe I should have tried to buy some pliers instead of a watch? I bet Walgreens would have had some of those...
