Anecdote
I was quite pleased to be returning on a Saturday, because on Sundays the railway lines are always undergoing maintenance (dunno why — they managed for 150 years without having to shut them down one day a week) but on Saturdays they run a normal service.
So, I got to Liverpool Street, looked at the departure board, and not a single train was heading anywhere near Colchester. I've no idea why, I was never told. I asked at the inquiries desk and was told to take the Central Line to Newbury Park, then a bus to Ingatestone where a train would take me to Colchester (stopping at every station in between).
That's the kind of transport service that makes Britain really stand out from those of continental Europe...
