Dented Plates

Weird

These plates are for sale in the porcellain shop at Hornsea Freeport, near where my dad lives:

What are they for? Those dents look as if they might fit eggs or spoons, but why would you need that many of them?

Well, let's ask Mr Google and see if he knows...

Well, if Mr Google knows, he isn't telling.

Damn, I knew I should have asked the people behind the counter. This is what comes of being completely ignorant of what comprises formal dinnerware.
