I have a strong suspicion that most of the world's acronyms are back-fitted so as to make happy matches with existing words. OK, so MMORPG doesn't fall into that category, but MUD does.
Every once in a while, though, an obvious acronym has an unhappy match with an existing word. I can therefore imagine the alarm that gripped the scientists at CERN when they were looking for an acronym for their Large Ion Collider Experiment, until someone suggested that it was A Large Ion Collider Experiment...
