Cloudburst

Anecdote

There was a cloudburst here today. It only lasted a short while, but vast quantities of water fell from the sky. I drove of to the university and found one of the major access roads into Colchester was flooded a foot deep, except for a small patch on the side I was using which meant I didn't miss the lecture I was giving.

When I arrived on campus, the rain had just passed. It seems it wasn't something that the new students from overseas had been prepared for:

• A girl, scared by a conker (still in its shell) that had fallen from a tree, watching in fear as her brave boyfriend stamped it to death with his heel.
• A girl in full Moslem veil, so soaked that it was sticking to her face, protesting, "It only lasted a minute! Only a minute!".
• A sodden young man, asking directions from a home student standing under an awning, being told, "Yes, I am a student. Just, I'm not a student here...".
• Another young man, who'd been inside during the rain, stepping on the grass to get round someone walking slowly and losing his shoe to the mud.
