Anecdote
I stopped off to buy some petrol this morning (£28.95 for 30.83 litres — costlier than nearby Asda, but not entailing a time-consuming diversion over the world's most stupidly complicated roundabout) and paid by credit card. They gave me a slip to sign, which I duly did.
I don't know what it is with this particular garage, but they always want me to sign for my fuel. The rest of the country went chip and PIN at midnight on Valentine's Day, but Braiswick Service Station is resolutely staying with the signatures. I don't know how they manage it, given that the credit card companies will automatically decline payments if a PIN isn't used with a chip and PIN card. I've attempted to find out from the staff, but they're not forthcoming.
A couple of weeks ago.
Me: Still using signatures?
Old Woman: Yes.
Me: Why aren't you using chip and PIN?
Old Woman: Yes.
Me: Don't you have to use chip and PIN now?
Old Woman: Yes.
Me: So why do I have to sign?
Old Woman: Yes.
Today.
Me: Still using signatures?
Young Man: Urrr?
Me: Why aren't you using chip and PIN?
Young Man: Urrr?
Me: Don't you have to use chip and PIN now?
Young Man: Urrr?
Me: So why do I have to sign?
Young Man: Urrr?
I suppose I should be grateful that there's still one place I can go where I'm not asked for my "PIN number".
