Torture

Outburst

This morning on the Today Programme there was an interview with John Bellinger, a representative of the US State Department, mainly about the new extradition treaty between the US and the UK (verdict: yes it is biased in favour of the US, but it used to be biased in favour of the UK, so that makes it alright). The interviewer (John Humphrys) asked about America's attitude to torture, and was met with the usual response about its depending on what you mean by torture, but that President Bush has said that he has not authorised and never will authorise its use.

Wh-wh-what?!

I don't know how to break this to you, America, but giving your head of state the power to authorise terrorism is not the mark of a civilised country.
