When I said my video card smells of smoke, I wasn't joking. Tonight, that smell of smoke became actual smoke while I played (what else?) Civ4.
Looking at the debris, it seems that the card got so hot trying to deal with Civ4's crazed graphics demands (despite my having turned absolutely everything down to a minimum) that it got hot enough to melt the plastic blades on the fan. Once the fan couldn't turn, it really went to town.
I've put back my old GeForce 2. Maybe after Christmas a new PC will be in order...
