Anecdote
Q: What's a foot long and slippery?
A: A slipper.
Yesterday, I went to Marks & Spencer and bought a new pair of slippers. Yes, slippers: I've never made any claims to being cool. They were £11 a pair, which is quite stiff, but they were down from an even stiffer £13.
When I took them to the checkout, the sales assistant picked them up, turned them over, and scanned the barcode. She scanned the barcode on each slipper. She then asked me for £22. When I pointed out that slipper prices are generally for the pair, not the individual slipper, she said: "Oh, I thought they were expensive!".
M&S's like-for-like sales in the 13 weeks to 2 April were down 4.9% on the same period last year.
