Broad Daylight

Anecdote

It would have been my mother's birthday yesterday.

In the depths of winter, when it was dark before 4pm, she'd say "Just you wait, it'll be broad daylight at 5 o'clock on my birthday". She did this often. Sometimes, she'd say "It'll be broad daylight at 5 o'clock on my birthday, just you wait" but otherwise there was little variation.

Yesterday, I decided to put her assertion to the test.

On the left, my garden at 12:00 yesterday. On the right, my garden at 17:00 yesterday.

My phone's camera tried to brighten things up, but it was more like dusk than broad daylight. Where she grew up, 200 or so miles north of here, it would be darker still.

I'll have to switch off all the fancy post-processing my camera does and try again next year.

I can see I'm going to be told to mow the lawn soon.
