Learning the Learning Outcomes

Anecdote

7 Dec 2023 University: If you want to change your modules for next academic year, you have until 12 Jan 2024 to fill in this aggravating form to tell us.
11 Dec 2023 Me: Here is the aggravating form. I want to remove a learning outcome.
18 Mar 2024 University: Your learning outcomes are not using level 7 descriptors. Please rewrite them as soon as possible. Read this tiresome document explaining how to rewrite them to level 7.

Why ask for something by a 12 Jan deadline, not look at it until two months later then require a response as soon as possible?

Well, that's how university bureaucracy works.

18 Mar 2024 Me: This is a module shared between postgraduates (level 7) and undergraduates (level 6). The same students are taught the same material. How can I rewrite the learning outcomes at level 7 when most of the people on the module are level 6?
18 Mar 2024 University: You're using the word "describe", which isn't appropriate at any level. Read this tiresome document explaining how to rewrite them to level 7.
18 Mar 2024 Me: They've read that same way for 15 years and only now, when I want to remove one, do you say I need to change the language.

I looked through the tiresome document and chose the first word I saw that was level 7.

Old learning outcomes:
1. Discuss the design principles of virtual worlds.
2. Discuss the theory of virtual worlds.
3. Discuss the relationships between virtual worlds and the real world.

New learning outcomes:
1. Evaluate the design principles of virtual worlds.
2. Evaluate the theory of virtual worlds.
3. Evaluate the relationships between virtual worlds and the real world.

This seems to be acceptable, at least for this committee. It has to go through two other committees and an individual before it's accepted.

The reason I wanted to change the learning outcomes, by the way, was because I have to address each one of them in the module's assessments (assignments and exams). The one I wanted to remove was:

Discuss the past, present and future of virtual worlds.

This is because there wasn't as much material on that but I had to devote an examination question to it, which meant I couldn't assess the other learning outcomes in much depth. It seems that I have been allowed to remove it, but I suspect they'll want me to add another because three is fairly low. I therefore expect to receive another request to act "as soon as possible" to change my learning outcomes in such a way that it appears there are four learning outcomes for the same material.
