Wassand Hall

Anecdote

We went to my home town of Hornsea this weekend to see my stepmother and come back with a car full of assorted weird possessions my dad had accumualted (surgical blades, dickie bow ties, marbles — that kind of thing).

On the way there, we noticed that Wassand Hall was open. Wassand Hall is at the western end of Hornsea Mere, which is the largest body of fresh water in Yorkshire. I'd never been to Wassand Hall because it's very rarely open to the public. We therefore decided to take a look around (I got a discount on the entry fee for being over 60 ... sigh)..

It was actually quite nice — even better when there wasn't a car blocking the view. It's not a huge stately home, but it's got some nice things in it nevertheless. The grounds are pretty, and I'm sure we'd have spent more time wandering them if it hadn't started to rain.

It's amazing how you can live so close to a landmark for decades and never get to visit it. The closest I've ever been is when we went on a walk around the mere on a school day out once.

Now to figure out what to do with my telescope and my grandfather's hat.
