Baldur's Gate

Miscellaneous

After I finished Baldur's Gate 3, I replayed Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate 2 (enhanced editions). I finished them on Christmas Eve.

Both still hold up very well. BG2 remains one of my all-time favourite games, but its Throne of Bhaal expansion is tiresome and irritating. It's just one boss fight after another, with mages doing little but pumping in spells to remove the boss's magic and fighters only sucking up damage and quaffing potions while beating on the boss to make occasional hits in the moments between the boss's losing its protections and its swiftly regaining them. Throw in magic-proof, level-draining adds that target the mages and it gets very annoying very quickly. The final fight (which took me over a week to win) basically comes down to luck. Given how great BG2 itself is, the expansion is a huge disappointment. Even the story is rubbish.

Maybe I'll replay BG3 next year, but after so many RPGs I fancy a strategy game instead. Perhaps I'll let Victoria 3 crush me again.
