Remote Chance

Anecdote

I spent yesterday afternoon having afternoon tea in Wivenhoe House with a student and a former student. Neither were my students, so there was nothing unprofessional about it (except perhaps that I failed to recognise the former student as she'd cut her hair and stopped wearing glasses). After two hours of convivial conversation, we walked back to the university proper and stopped in square 3 to go our separate ways.

As we chatted, I noticed another student stop and wait for us to finish.

It turned out he was one of the students on my CE317 module, having taken CE217 last year. We had never seen each other in person, because the lectures were all either over Zoom or recorded; I hadn't seen him virtually, either, come to that, but he recognised me from the webinars. He did actually look vaguely familiar, probably because I must have checked him out in the university's student database at some point (I do this sometimes when students get exceptional marks, so I can sound them out about doing a PhD if I see them in person).

I don't think I've met in person any of the other students I've taught at Essex University these past two years. That's ... remarkable.

Anyway, as he accompanied me back to my car, he mentioned that he'd read every one of my blog posts.

I've been blogging since 1st January 2005. I haven't missed a day, and some days have several posts. Today's post is my 8,085th. That student (hi! I know you're reading this!) has a lot of time on his hands.

Stats fans may like to know that the month with the most posts in January with 703, but given that May has 697 and we haven't had it this year yet, I expect January will soon be overtaken. February has the fewest posts at 618. You should have thought about having more days in you, February.

It's good to know that there actually are students attending my lectures, and that they're not all bots who have been set to log into Zoom to trick me.
