Ancestral Practice

Weird

My mother's maternal grandmother was a Stott who married a Wighton. Her sister, who was (unsurprisingly) also a Stott, also married a Wighton. Said Wightons were from different branches of the Wighton line, but both include marriages to assorted women from the Drummond family.

Why do ancestors do this? I keep telling them it makes keeping track of what's going on difficult, but they just won't listen.
