Anecdote
My busiest period of the academic year began yesterday, with the arrival of the CE317 assignments. I have to mark these as soon as possible because the CE217 assignment arrive next week. I have three weeks to mark them, but in parallel rather than in series. The fact I'm part-time has no impact on this deadline.
The CE317 assignment involves having the students create a plot to fit the full, 17-step version of the Hero's Journey. Marking each such assignment takes me twice as long per student than I'm supposed to spend per student in the entire academic year (including marking their examination scripts).
The pain of doing this is occasionally alleviated by what the students write. Back in the day, these were called "howlers", but no-one seems to use that term any more.
Last year, I made a note of some of these. Here they are, for your delight:
