Anecdote

So far this week I've been invited to review papers for seven different conferences. Bearing in mind that it's only Monday, I'm quite impressed. Unfortunately, as this is my busiest time of the year and I've already committed to reviewing papers for one conference (plus the usual journals), I've had to turn them all down.

Hmm, actually I haven't exaclt turned them down: I've failed to respond to the emails. I'll only turn them down if they send me a "gentle reminder". This is because if I turn them down by replying to them, the organisers will know my email address works and will ask me again next year.

Given how much it costs to attend some of the conferences (even virtually), reviewers really ought to be paid. The best I ever get is an offer of money off the attendance fee. OK, so that still wouldn't persuade me to review any papers because being paid doesn't make me any less busy, but it beats having to do it out of the goodness of my heart.

I suppose I should be pleased that they're still asking me to review in the first place. Diversity and inclusivity considerations mean I'm not asked to keynote as many conferences as I was in the past, but it seems that these factors aren't quite so important when it comes to reviewing papers so I still have my uses.
