Experiment Over

Anecdote

My Facebook experiment, in which I clicked on every second advertisement link to Disney princesses that Facebook presented me with is now at an end. The links are now repetitive, connecting me to two main sites that harvest artists' work and present them with commentary followed by ads for bizarre things they think I may need and links to other click-bait content. The Disney princesses themselves are mainly re-envisions, such as "as villains", "with their children", "in modern dress", "as cute animals", "as students", "in classic Chinese art style", "with short hair", "with realistic hair", "with their pets as Pokémon" and "as 1940s mystery novel covers" (that one's actually pretty damned good).

Remarkably, I have been seeing no ads for Disney princess-related products anywhere else. Normally, I only need so much as look at a web site and I see ads for it seconds later when I go somewhere else, but that's not the case here. The web sites that are paying to have me see them in my feed seem to be entirely financed by the ads they themselves show, which are for nothing to do with Disney princesses (the one I'm looking at now has: handmade Swiss watches, a strategy game for over-30s, belly fat reducer, RSPCA Cotswold house draw, Mediterranean cruises, Etherium, joint pain relief, dog adoption services, pension drawdown services, high-fashion wedding guest dresses, baking soda, we-will-buy-your-motorhome, Afghan food charity, a city-building game, eyelash growth serum, will-writing service, ...).

My fears that the Internet knows everything about me are unfounded.
