I was wondering what need the Gas Board had for a forge when I wrote the entry on my grandad's would-have-been-100th birthday yesterday. My dad has emailed to tell me it wasn't a forge, it was a boiler: they had six steam-raising boilers that were used to push town gas into holders for storage until the customers needed it. He switched to the stores department when town gas was replaced by natural gas.
Yes, that makes a bit more sense than a forge.
