Superstition

Anecdote

At 10:24 this morning I was waiting for the 10:25 bus service number 250 from (Ipswich via) Colchester to Stansted Airport (then Heathrow Airport) when I spotted a pin on the floor. Remembering the badly-rhyming saying, "see a pin and pick it up and all the day you'll have good luck", I duly picked it up. As I don't fall into the "see a pin and pick it up and all the day you'll have a pin" camp, I immediately threw it into the nearby bin. Well, who knows what security alerts it might have caused at Stansted? It must have been 15mm long!

The 10:25 bus didn't arrive until 10:45, which is after the bus service number 250 from (Heathrow Airport via) Stansted Airport to Colchester (then Ipswich) arrived at the same stand and confused half the waiting would-be passengers into trying to board it.

I therefore can't say that the "all the day" component of the superstition lived up to its billing. The only luck I got from picking up the pin was that I didn't stand on it first.
