Anecdote
I had brunch in Fortnum & Mason's today. Here's one snatch of an overheard customer/waitress dialogue:
Waitress: Would you like anything to drink?
Customer: Can I have a grapefruit juice, please?
Waitress: Certainly, sir. We have orange, cranberry or tomato.
Customer: I'll have the tomato.
Fortnum & Mason's: where "certainly, sir" means "no".
